Benefits of exercise? Too many to count…

I won’t clog up this blog with too much preaching about the benefits of regular exercise. But I could! Better mood? Check. Better health? Of course! More energy? You’d better believe it! Sharper mind? Better social skills? Yes and yes. And the list goes on. And on. Bottom line is that the short amount of time it takes to MOVE YOUR BODY EVERY DAY when you’re working from home pays you back, and then some.
But for some of us, the intense schedule of our home office reality just allows no time for exercise. Or sometimes it does, and too often it doesn’t. It depends on the day. I hear this from a lot of home office people in my community. And I am sensitive to it. After all, everyone is different and has a unique set of challenges. But almost everyone can find a few minutes every day to do something to get their body moving. Move more in your home office!

Here’s how to do it – in three easy steps

First, schedule it and track it. This means assigning a time to when you will exercise, either a precise time in your planner, or a window of time when you know you can do it. And after you have done it, tick off the box and smile that you got it done. And if you didn’t do it, then be aware that you didn’t, and figure out how you can make it happen tomorrow. Be planful, and create awareness. They are the key to sticking to habits.

Secondly  (and this will help you “squeeze” your movement in your busiest days), look at the meetings or tasks you have and see which ones allow you to “couple” movement with work. My little secret is that I often do a workout while I am in a Zoom call. It’s an easy way to multitask. (Make sure you’re on mute!!!!). You can stop your workout for a second when it’s your turn to speak. Or do a walk and talk outside when you just have a phone call. Or if you have some thinking or creative work to do, go for a run and ponder away. There are many ways to work and move at the same time, and for those busiest days, this tactic can be a life saver.

And finally, plot out for yourself two or three “user friendly” ways to move. The simplest and often best one is the daily walk outside. It can be practical, as you do your grocery trip, or you have a chat with a friend or family member. And as a bonus, you’re enjoying fresh air and nature. Other options are a 7-15 minute workout routine. There are so many options out there. One of the bonus elements of the home office life is that you can just flop down on the floor in a way that you can’t do as well at work. And just as important, you can be sweaty and a little smelly for a few minutes while you’re on your next Zoom. So take advantage, and when you’ve got a window of opportunity for 15 minutes, get down, and get sweaty.

Put this simple 3-step method of squeezing in daily movement into busy your home office day, and enjoy the benefits. I hope this helps you move more in your home office and live your BEST home office day!
